At the time of this show airing, in May 2024, we are now one year and one month into the brutal war in Sudan. "Currently, about 25 million people in Sudan – of whom over 14 million are children – need humanitarian assistance and support. Alarmingly 17.7 million people – more than one-third of the country’s population – are facing acute food insecurity under a warning of potential famine, with nearly 5 million people on the brink of famine. More than 8.6 million people – about 16 per cent of the total population of the country – have fled their homes since the conflict started. They have sought refuge within Sudan or in neighbouring countries, making Sudan the largest displacement crisis in the world." (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.)
Here in Germany, we are seeing major repression of the growing Palestinian solidarity movement, and it's inspiring to see this movement constantly growing despite these repressive forces. At the same time, we see comparatively low engagement and support for the demands of and actions organized by Sudanese in Berlin. We have to ask ourselves: why is that? And what can we do about it?
To help us grow our solidarity and follow the demands of the Sudanese people to #KeepEyesOnSudan, on this episode we’ll be in conversation with organization Nas Al Sudan to learn more about what is happening in Sudan, as well as how listeners can grow their knowledge of the situation and show meaningful and lasting solidarity.
Nas Al Sudan is a community platform dedicated to providing foundational information about the current conflict in Sudan, covering key players, Sudanese history, and general knowledge, while also serving as a central hub for essential resources, offering crisis response mechanisms, educational support, and community networks. We’re joined on this episode by Suha and Reem.
